Playing With Words Cathy Lane. A new edited book which will explore some of the ways in which composers and artists are using and have used words, especially the spoken word, as the primary material in their work. The book will concentrate on the kinds of creative play to be found in different sound based genres such as electro acoustic composition, text sound composition, and sound poetry, but it will to some extent reflect practices in other disciplines of such as digital arts, electronic concrete and experimental poetry, performance art and fine art. Included in this book is A Culture Of Silence by Brownsierra, it was made by a process of cut ups taken from literary sources, and also contains a glossary compiled from a variety of text books. It was first published in Noisegate Issue 9 and then published as a limited edition artist publication under the same name. Later rendered in letraset and ink as series of paintings exhibited at Total Asbo

Publish and Be Damned 03 August 2008 A one day publishing fair and archive surveying an abundance of independent publications, publish and be damned demonstrates individual experimental approaches to making and distributing the works of artists, writers and musicians outside the commercial mainstream through publishing fairs, a touring archive and occasional events. This year four corners books will be publishing a handbook for publish and be damned - a record of the days events as well as a snapshot of self publishing. Each publish and be damned participant will be featured on a separate page with an image from one of their publications. It proposes that a telephone be used as a way of exhibiting artworks (sound works) ; the idea being that a telephone number becomes a gallery that is directly accessible from any telephone in the world. The 'viewer' may call the number form anywhere, and hear the work at anytime. Telephone is, simultaneously, an international project of considerable ambition, and a very simple, direct project using available and modest facilities. It is an entirely non commercial project that comes from an interest in sound work and its presentation. Telephone will operate from London, but is in many ways placeless. The work will be accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at a standard (land line) call rate. There will be only one line, so that any one moment, only one caller will be able to access the work A standard digital answering machine will be used for telephone. This will mean that the quality of the recording will be basic , and will limit the length of any single work to two minutes maximum. The work will be recorded directly into the machine. Where possible the machine will be taken to the participating artist for the recording of work, when this is not possible, other arrangements will be made to the satisfaction of the artist. The following artists have been approached and invited to participate in telephone.
